Problem: Failed mortar - Failed mortar joints can be caused by trapped moisture in a brick or block wall, physical stress or a poorly repaired mortar mixture, among other causes. Repair the joints by tuck-pointing with fresh mortar before the damage worsens and allows more moisture into the wall.
Problem: Potholes - Potholes, like most masonry and concrete problems, are caused by changes in temperature and moisture levels, especially when they involve freezing or thawing. Repairing potholes in asphalt is fairly easy - just clean out the hole, add fresh asphalt mix and tamp down.
Problem: Pop outs - Pop outs occur when aggregate near a concrete surface becomes detached, leaving small voids behind. Causes include under-floating, improper curing and severe freeze conditions. While pop-outs are common in poured concrete walls and foundations, they occasionally occur in horizontal surfaces as well. Pop-outs are usually of visual concern only and can be filled with commercial vinyl concrete patch if you find them bothersome.
