Prestressed concrete info: Prestressed concrete products are usually precast. A prestressed concrete beam, for instance, is a structure of concrete and reinforced steel. The steel is placed in tension by applying hydraulic pressure before concrete is poured. After the concrete is cured, tension is released causing the concrete to be squeezed together. Such a structural unit may be designed to use only half the concrete and a quarter of the steel used in the conventional sense.
Concrete steps have a high exposure to the elements and to stress and are more prone to problems than other types of poured concrete structures. Damaged steps can be rebuilt in some cases, bu t in most cases, the lifespan of concrete steps is shorter than for other structures, and eventually they'll need to be removed or replaced as part of a commercial remodeling job.
Brick and block structures typically develop problems at the mortar joints. As a result, by far the most common repair needed to keep theses structures in good condition is tuck-pointing the mortar joints. If a small section of a step corner is damaged, don't try to repair it by re-bonding the missing chunk. You're better off fixing it by re-building the corner in much the same way as the step edge is re-built. Use a hammer and cold chisel to remove any loose or crumbling concrete from the damaged area and clean out with a wire brush.
While the patch is still wet, cut two pieces of scrap lumber to fit around the corner, then tape them to the step to hold the patch in place. Add more patching material, if needed, and smooth with a trowel. Allow the patch to harden fully before removing boards.
